Routers are sold with rocket-ship numbers — "AX5400!" — that answer a question nobody asked. The questions that matter: how fast is your internet plan, how big and solid is your home, and how many devices pile on at 8pm. Answer those three and the right router picks itself. Start with your plan, not the box
A router can't exceed your ISP plan — a $400 gaming router on a 300Mbps plan delivers 300Mbps with better lighting. Match tiers instead: plans up to 500Mbps are fully served by mainstream Wi-Fi 6 routers; gigabit plans want a current mid-range with a full-gigabit WAN port and the processing to fill it; multi-gig plans (2Gbps+) are the only place Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5G/10G ports stop being decoration. The reverse also matters: if speed tests next to the router already match your plan, a new router won't make Netflix faster — your problem is coverage (next section) or the plan itself.
On renting: ISP gateways cost $10–15/month forever. A purchased router typically pays for itself within a year and outperforms the rental — just check your ISP's compatibility list first, and know that fiber setups sometimes keep the ISP box in "bridge mode" with your router behind it.
Coverage: single router, mesh, or a cable
Single router covers apartments and modest single-floor homes — if placed like it matters: central, elevated, out of the media cabinet, away from the microwave. Placement fixes more dead zones than purchases do; try it first, it's free.
Mesh systems (a router plus satellite nodes) are the honest answer past ~1,800 sq ft, across floors, or through brick and plaster. Two well-placed nodes beat three careless ones; nodes want line-of-sight-ish positioning halfway to the dead zone, not buried in the far corner.
The underrated third option: one Ethernet cable to the far room feeding a cheap access point outperforms any wireless mesh through the same walls, because the backhaul doesn't fight the airwaves. Wi-Fi extenders that repeat wirelessly are the weakest tool — they halve throughput for the zone they serve; treat them as a $30 band-aid, not a plan.
Wi-Fi 6 vs. 6E vs. 7, without the marketing
Wi-Fi 6 is the 2026 default: its real gift is handling device crowds efficiently — the 40-gadget smart home stops stepping on itself. Cheap now, mature, correct for most. Wi-Fi 6E opens the 6GHz band: gloriously uncongested, shorter range, and only devices from the last couple of years use it — its sweet spot is dense apartment buildings where 5GHz is a traffic jam of neighbors. Wi-Fi 7 adds multi-link and huge channels; it's genuinely faster and genuinely unnecessary below multi-gig plans — buy it for longevity if you keep routers seven years, skip it if you upgrade on failure. The one wrong purchase: new Wi-Fi 5 gear, which saves $20 today and re-buys itself within the router's life.
Number decoder: "AX3000"-style figures sum theoretical bandwidth across all bands — no single device sees it. Use them only to compare within a lineup, never as a promise.
What each price band actually buys

Setup hygiene that outlasts the purchase
Whatever you buy: change the admin password (not just the Wi-Fi password), turn on auto-updates — unpatched routers are the most-hijacked device in homes — use WPA3/WPA2 mixed mode, and put smart-home gadgets and guests on the guest network so the cheap plug camera never shares a lane with your laptop. Reboot rarely fixes anything permanently; firmware updates do. Position check twice a year: routers migrate into cabinets and behind TVs, and coverage quietly dies. When to buy
